There are a lot of users who have been inactive for 5+ years and likely won't return. They have pets with pretty cool names that a new user couldnt use to name a new pet that will be active for some time.

I really think something should be done. Theie accounts should be deleted after a certain amount of inactivity that pretty much confirms they won't be back (like maybe 3 years, or 5 if you're being generous).

What do you think? I want to refer a friend and she wants her pet name to be either Baron or RedBaron but both names are taken by users that haven't been seen in 3 and 6 years!

Also, a lot of items in the trades are stuck eternally because of users who haven't logged on on years, so it creates a false hope of getting said item.

I'm sure a lot of other users would benefit from these changes.

While it can be disheartening to see a lot of truly cool names already gone, there are MANY equally cool names still available on here. It's chaffing in one way to see the old, not likely to be used accounts, but I've seen equally new accounts that snag an amazing name/pet and then *poof! they disappear also never to be seen again.

I like being able to see the older accounts. Just today I got to see a Support Medal on an account, and I'd assume this was one of the founding members of IcePets. It's neat to see the history and look at 'back in the day' accounts smile_happy.gif

There's also no guarantee these people and their accounts are permanently gone forever n ever n ever. I have seen older users return to their accounts after years away. I'd be mad and sad if someone took away my account just because I hadn't logged on for awhile.

Perhaps if it's a problem for the servers, or IcePets wanted to clear older unused accounts, they could send out emails that were used to create the accounts, prompting the users to come back and be active ~ or else it would disappear? Perhaps give them a returning package or box for logging back in and using their old account so they can see what IcePets has morphed into??

@CoastPony

Yeah... I guess that's true too. An email notice would be great though. And what you mentioned about getting a little something for returning...

League of Legends did a clear-out a few years ago that opened up a bunch of usernames. There were specific requirements- not only length of time absent, but the account also had to be less than level 5, and I think there were a few other criteria. There was a big announcement weeks before they did it, and I think they sent emails out, so everyone knew it was coming.

(Sadly, the username I wanted was a level 10 smile_tongue.gif)

Here is the node, you who hate change and fear revolution. Keep these two squatting men apart; make them hate, fear, suspect each other. Here is the anlage of the thing you fear. This is the zygote. For here "I have lost my land" is changed; a cell is split and from its splitting grows the thing you hate—"We lost our land." The danger is here, for two men are not as lonely and perplexed as one. And from this first "we" there grows a still more dangerous thing: "I have a little food" plus "I have none." If from this problem the sum is "We have a little food," the thing is on its way, the movement has direction.

Yes! Purges are great! It's like cleaning out the junk in the back of the fridge to make space for new junk. Perhaps some pets (Zabeus, Zephyrs, expensive/rare colors, etc.) could be pounded instead of deleted.

@Gladion Had I responded to this last year, likely I would have voted yes, but it's a difficult discernment, really.

Being up in years, if something happened to me, I would dread thinking all my beloved IcePets would be gone after a length of time. They would be the nicest "memorial" I have for my friends to remember me by. I don't consider them just taking up space or needing cleared out - they become honored members of the IcePets community. If I were long-term ill, then recovered to return - then how would I feel if all my little rascals were gone? How would anyone feel.

There's so much to be considered beyond whether a user has intentionally abandoned their account and wow, they had some great pet names.

When I joined IcePets, I wanted Loki in honor of my RL domestic rat of the same name - the actual spelling had already been taken, so I added another k and it's still Lokki.

Well, I do tend to ramble - anyway, for what it's worth, I vote nay.

One other point is if an account has real life money involved. Some users will have custom avatars that have been bought and paid for with real money. Same with Ice shop items.

It becomes quite different if real money is involved.

And @Lokki has a great point, the accounts and their pets do make great memorials.

@CoastPony Very true - I never thought about the ic involved also. There's so much to consider here,, I agree. And thank you, my friend. smile_heart.gif

I used to think that purging inactive accounts was a good idea but I have since changed my mind. My reason is basically what everyone else has already mentioned...I wouldn't want to have life stop me from coming here and then being able to come back to nothing. It's not easy getting an account to a certain point. Starting over is trouble.

I suppose you all are right. I wonder, maybe something could be added to future accounts. A little button where you could chose whether to keep your account active regardless or to permanently delete it after a certain amount of inactivity. I've seen that done before and it seems to work well. Some users on an app called Telegram for example, opted for their account to "self destruct" after, say, 3 months of inactivity. Something like that may be a good feature to consider at least..?

I think an account only should be deleted after like, 10 years, if there isn't any real money invested and if it would be communicated per email.

Also the Terms and Conditions should be changed before doing something like that.

So it would take the staff a lot money and time to generate some new possible names, the good ones get directly taken from existing users. They may invest in a PSK, but that wouldn't make up for the costs and risks of deleting the old profiles.

Hmm while I can understand where you're coming from, I don't think it's a good idea to delete an entire account after that many years. I would think of a more like "Surrender your pet" kind of thing after a certain amount of years that puts the pet in the pound automatically in order to ensure the name can stay in circulation. Then it would give an oppurtunity for someone to grab a pet with a cool name and keep things interesting perhaps

First of all, niche pet sites like this don't have nearly as an active userbase compared to other website models. It's very normal for someone to revisit a site like this even after years of inactivity. Secondly, the pet and account names held up in these inactive accounts really isn't significant enough to merit deletion. There are still SO many awesome names available.

However, I think you're right when it comes to the trades. There should be an expiry placed on trading post items--It's ridiculous that there are items that have been up for eight years...

Yep, I would like to see innactive acc's erased. But only true ghost accounts with low Page Views or collections.
