In my personal opinion, I think that pit bulls are some of the sweetest dogs on Earth. Yes, they have a bad reputation, but that is because HUMANS have bred them and trained them to fight bulls and, nowadays, to fight other pit bulls. What do you think? I want to hear your opinion.

I think any dog has the possibility of being either sweet or awful, it all depends on the OWNER. That being said, every pit pull I've met has just been darling. I've had more bad experiences with small terriers and jack russles than bulls *shrugs*

Not inherently vicious. Pit bulls have the POTENTIAL to be vicious because of their body type and how they've been bred. Their personality is based upon how you raise them, if they're bred and trained to fight then that's all they know.

All of the pit bulls I've met have been sweet as can be. smile_happy.gif

I truly believe any dog can be sweet or vicious. It truly does depend on the owner and how they are raised. Saying that though certain breeds do tend to be more prone to vicious tendency then others

He's mine. His name is Dude. He's currently trying to sneak into the trash and is barking at a banana peel.

There's no such thing as bad dogs-- just bad owners.

I believe they're not vicious. Some of them can be bad (i.e. my dad had one that was always trying to bite people), but that's certainly not the breed's fault. That's just because lots of terrible people tend to try to raise them badly. Every dog has the potential to be absolutely sweet or absolutely terrifying. And Pit Bulls are no exceptions. Most of the time they're great pets and good dogs.

I have a pit/lab mix who is the sweetest dog I have ever known. My chihuahua mix is the monster. And the bully. My big dog doesnt even try to fight her. He just sits there and takes the bullying. Any dog can be vicious. Anything with teeth has the ability to bite.. Pits have a bad reputation in my because of how the media portrays them. Taking stories about dog bite victims in gang territories.. OF COURSE the dogs are aggressive in those areas. Theyre all used for dog fighting.. My fur babies were brought up with lots of love and affection. He is so kind and he loves everything. People, squirrels, other dogs, cats, bunnies.. even rats. He has never been even slightly aggressive.

Ugh. He is SUCH a monster.

So precious!!
And I know what you mean about the being bullied thing. My other dog, Sweetart, is a flaming douche to him. He just takes it and comes to me if she's being too mean. My poor baby will never be alpha dog.

@Abi
My small dog is a douche too. Her name is LUna and she is the biggest bully in the universe. My Kow has a saggy face so Luna is always biting on his lips and stuff. Sometimes he cries smile_sad.gif and I have to put her in doggy jail for being mean. The most damage Kow does is whip people with his tail when he is excited.

@tuilove44
Thanks you! I think it is the sweetest picture xD

Growing up, my neighbor had a pitbull that they kept outside on a boat chain. It spent it's whole life hooked up there and never knew what the inside of a home looked like. He never got to run around outside of that twenty foot circle or ever have anyone play with him. They tried to teach him the command "bite" (I don't know why) but it backfired and instead of it becoming a "skill", he just learned that whenever a hand would come near him, that he should snap at it.

He tried to bite me quite a few times when I went to give him treats, but I never blamed him. Dogs aren't meant to be chained--all animals in general weren't made to live such lives.

No being was created to be "vicious" or "aggressive". We are all just a product of our environment.

@someonesusie

Honestly I think that they just didn't know how to raise a dog.
Another neighbor tried to explain that when he went through his puppy-biting phase, instead of teaching the dog that it's not an appropriate way to play, they tried to teach him "bite" as a way to control the action. They figured that if they could teach him to bite on command, then they could theoretically teach him not to bite on command.

When that obviously backfired and they weren't skilled in dog training, they gave up trying to unteach the damage they already created. After a few months, a small playful puppy turned into a huge, +80 lbs dog that could do some serious damage.

It wasn't the dog's fault.
He was just doing what he was taught.

Of course, their treatment of him after the fact is inexcusable. They created the problem and he shouldn't have had to live his life on a chain because of that. But it's what happens when you have uneducated people that own dogs.

That is terrible though. :/ I live in a pretty rough area so dogs chained up outside all day/every day is something I see all the time. And they train them to be vicious. Pitbulls are shoot on scene here. So I have to be extra careful with my Kow boy even though he wouldnt hurt a fly. My small dog was attacked and nearly killed once. Not by a pit but it was a very large dog. I had to beat the dog into dropping her. It was an awful experience. It could have just as easily been a child. I think people assume that dogs are low maintenance. As long as you can train them to use the bathroom outside then the rest is easy. That is not true though. It takes a lot of effort to train them properly.

I have met many Pitties in my life and all of them have been some of the sweetest animals I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with. I would actually love to rescue one some day. There are so many that need homes, its almost unbelieveable!

@tuilove44. I agree. I really believe in my heart and soul it depends upon how any living creature is raised...the amount of love and attention and affection they receive.

Any dog can be vicious. They are just like children. Any dog can be born sweet or mean. They can be taught to be sweet or mean.
When I took my animal control class, they said chihuahuas are more dangerous and almost fond more in the pounds than pits.

They have the potential to be vicious but so does a Pomeranian it's just Pit Bulls are big and do more damage when they are. The problem and why people think they are is because they are popular guard dogs and for the terrible folk that use them for illegal things. Unfortunately, the latter group of people rarely treat them right and the former often don't get them properly socialized.

*any* dog can be vicious. i've met some lovely pit bulls, and i've met one used as a guard dog by an ex gang member. he was still a good dog, listened very well, but you do not go near him when he is doing his job. that being said, i am usually wary (or maybe careful is more the word?) around strange dogs, big or small, simply because i don't know the dog.
