What are your thoughts on Halloween? Love it? Hate it?

I personally hate it. I never understood the point, and hated trick-or-treating as a kid. Later on in life, something bad happened to me on Halloween, and since dates are very significant to me, the day is forever tainted.

I'm curious as to what other people's thoughts are on this so-called "holiday". (I don't get if off work, therefore, it's not a holiday in my book.)

And regardless of my feelings about real-life Halloween, Icepets Halloween is pretty awesome. smile_happy.gif

@brokenribbon

As a Christian, growing up we were always told to be careful about how much we "get into" Halloween. Personally though (and as a chunky kid) I loved it. I trick-or-treated until I was 15 or 16. It was fantastic. I do try not to let myself get too into it still, based on it's origins (Christmas origins is a topic for another day) and the fact that some people still celebrate...evilly. And hurt animals and do weird stuff and blah. BUT I love the cutesy Halloween stuff and I love how excited kids get when they are totally allowed to pretend to be someone completely different for a whole night. As an educator, I find it a valuable holiday and I can take it and teach multiple themes around it like acceptance and tolerance and all that.

Also, I'm going to move this to debates for you c:

Didn't really think this was a debate, but whatever.

Halloween is one of those days that I don't really care much for anymore. Christmas is the holiday that is tainted for me but this is about Halloween so...

As a kid, Halloween was fun and I was super shy so I tried to never go by myself. But, I had to a couple times and it was terrifying because I couldn't even say trick-or-treat to strangers and then there were the really scary houses where people jumped out at you and stuff. I scare easy as it is. Now, I don't really care. I'm 'too old' for it and I hate waiting around for people to show up. I live in an apartment building right now so it wasn't an issue but when I was living at home, I got tasked with handing out candy which wouldn't be an issue but when you only get 1 or 2 kids, it's boring.

But, just based on what little knowledge I have about Halloween's origins, it's pretty neat. I love the concept, I just don't care for the modern take if that makes any sense at all.

I love halloween and all, with how fun it can be to dress up and get free candy and such. Though the only thing I really don't like about it is some of the bad people that can be about, either making the candy dangerous to eat or dressing up and being mean in some bad ways.

I personally love dressing up, and am planning to create a costume for Halloween this year, but I haven't really participated in Halloween-y activities for 4+ years now.

I like Halloween, but I tend to get overwhelmed with responsibility that time of year and not always be able to do much to celebrate... I wish I could enjoy it more, but I tend to wind up jealous of people who are able to go all out.

Imma make a deal with the bad wolf so the bad wolf don't bite no more ~

I actually love Halloween. I use it as an excuse to go out and play, and wear costumes and have fun, unlike usually when I’m stuck at home with tons of homework.

I loooove Halloween. It's my favourite holiday, and October is my favourite month. Pumpkin everything, harvest colours and decorations, spooky stuff, horror movies! I love adorable cartoony monsters (monster-monsters, not vampies & zombies), and Halloween decorations. Also, it's a great time of year where it's getting cool and crisp, the leaves are turning, and it's feels super autmuny--but not frigid and depressing like later on in Nov!

Here is the node, you who hate change and fear revolution. Keep these two squatting men apart; make them hate, fear, suspect each other. Here is the anlage of the thing you fear. This is the zygote. For here "I have lost my land" is changed; a cell is split and from its splitting grows the thing you hate—"We lost our land." The danger is here, for two men are not as lonely and perplexed as one. And from this first "we" there grows a still more dangerous thing: "I have a little food" plus "I have none." If from this problem the sum is "We have a little food," the thing is on its way, the movement has direction.

I LOVE Halloween! I've always loved costumes and candy and just decorating in general. I've luckily never experienced people being terrible on Halloween- only on the news, but never in my area.

Unfortunately, my dad passed away on November 1st 2014, and I thought I would never celebrate Halloween again. But then I discovered Dia de los Muertos, and I started celebrating it for him. smile_heart.gif

@brokenribbon Halloween began as a celebration in the church, so was actually a religious holiday. The jack-o-lanterns traditionally were burned from midnight till dawn on All Hallows to ward off the evil spirits most active at that time.

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. I think there is some link with a harvest celebration?

Trick or Treating was a favorite time for me as a child. I have such fond memories of chilly to downright cold sometimes rainy evenings out gathering candy - before that became hazardous to one's health that is.

Yeah, Halloween is my favorite time of year!

Halloween is my favorite holiday next to Valentines Day. Just really heavy handed theme days are so fun, halloween mostly because it's the one day a year where it's appropriate to be totally macabre without something labeling you something you're not!smile_devil.gif

I love Halloween so much. I've always been a fan of the macabre, and so all the spooky costumes (without being too gory) are my favorite! It's fun to dress up as something else and just pretend for a day.

My other favorite thing about Halloween is all of the spooky-themed foods that get served at places and the TV specials of Halloween movies.

I know on pet sites like these and in video games, the "spooky forest"-type areas have always been my favorite places to visit. And there is ALWAYS a spooky forest.

Halloween is my favorite holiday! I love the horror movie marathons and the costume parties and the trick or treating and the houses that are decorated all spooky-like! I start planning my Halloween costume in July usually, and I go all out! Last year I went trick or treating as a sugar skull/skeleton at the age of 17, and as an 18 year old, I plan on trick or treating again!

As for the origins of Halloween, they don't interfere with my religion at all. When people tell me that they don't celebrate because it's "the Devil's birthday" I get quite annoyed, because that is so far from the truth it's ridiculous. I understand why a tragic event could make you not want to celebrate Halloween, as I personally tend to link events to their dates as well.

If you feel you do not belong in this world, it is because you were born to create a new one.
